To mark Barrett-Jackson’s half-century in business, in this special series we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite moments from the past 50 years – as well as some little-known facts about The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.

The world of reality television is commonplace today, but in the mid-2000s that wasn’t the case. Shows like MTV’s “The Real World,” along with now-popular series like “The Bachelor,” “The Amazing Race” and “American Idol” were new to the scene, and right alongside – debuting on December 26, 2005 – was a reality show geared specifically to car enthusiasts: “Life on the Block.”

The show, which ran for three seasons on SPEED (through January 14, 2008), followed Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson and President Steve Davis and all the behind-the-scenes goings-on during The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.

While the auctions had been going on since the early 1970s and televised from the mid-1990s, “Life on the Block” gave viewers a never-before-seen view of the intricately choreographed inner workings and day-to-day excitement experienced at these unique events.

It was all an extension of Craig Jackson’s vision to bring a broader awareness to car collecting; reaching more people and bringing the event into people’s living rooms so they could experience the hobby in a unique way. “It’s like a sporting event, but one where you can actually step onto the field yourself,” Jackson once said. “Just get up there on the block and you’re in the game – you’re playing in the game on live TV.”

Episodes included contending with unexpected rainstorms, dramatic bidding action, record-breaking sales, celebrities buying and selling vehicles at the auctions (including Tim Allen, Bill Goldberg, George Foreman, Tony Stewart and Reggie Jackson), the difficulty of staging bigger unique vehicles and more.

Of course, “Life on the Block” could really be considered as a “secondary” Barrett-Jackson reality show if you count the live broadcasts of the auctions themselves since 1996. “I’ve often said Barrett-Jackson is the longest-running reality show on television,” said Davis. “And it’s real reality – you can’t script this reality!”
