Before I reveal my top notes, let’s start with some basics first! We’ll cover what fragrances are, the differences between different types of fragrances, and a breakdown of fragrance notes.

What Are Fragrances?

It’s a complex mixture of what people in the industry refer to as raw materials. These raw materials can be extracts from natural sources or synthetic raw materials.

Oils are dissolved in a solvent (usually alcohol), to preserve a pleasant concoction of scents. The higher the concentration of oils – the greater the strength of the fragrance. The strength determines how long an application of the fragrance lasts on your skin.

Concentration and longevity of different fragrance types.

Fragrances come in many forms and are called different names but generally fall into these categories:

  • Eau Fraiche – The most diluted version of fragrance, usually with 1% – 3% perfume oil in alcohol and water. Usually lasts for less than an hour.
  • Cologne (Eau de Cologne) – The oldest term for perfume, used in North America for masculine scents. Light, fresh and fruity, typically composed of 2% – 4% perfume oils in alcohol and water. Tend to be used in fragrances for younger people. Usually lasts for about 2 hours.
  • Toilette (Eau de Toilette) – A light spray composition with 5% – 15% pure perfume essence dissolved in alcohol. Usually lasts for about 3 hours.
  • Perfume (Eau de Parfum) – Historically genderless, used to describe both men’s and women’s fragrances.  The best term used to describe a fragrance. Contains 15% – 20% pure perfume essence and lasts for about 5 to 8 hours.
  • Perfume – A corruption of the Latin phrase per fumum (through smoke). The most concentrated and expensive of all fragrance options. Slightly oilier, perfume, or parfum, is composed of 20% – 30% pure perfume essence. A single application of perfume can last up to 24 hours.

What Are Fragrance Notes?

Simply put, fragrance notes are the scents that you can smell in a certain fragrance. You know how sometimes a fragrance smells just like an orange, or vanilla, or leather… That’s all because of the note of that particular scent.

There are three categories of fragrance notes: Top notes, middle notes, and base notes.

Fragrance notes breakdown – Top, Middle and Base notes.

  • Top note – The top or basic note is the initial, lighter smell of the fragrance that hits the nose first. The top note lasts around 15 minutes – 2 hours.
Typical top and middle notes are various floral scents, fruity scents, marine/aquatic notes, and spices such as cinnamon. Examples of these notes include citruses, powdery scents, and light florals.
  • Medium note – Also referred to as the middle or heart notes – showcases the main elements of the fragrance. These notes develop after the top note clears – around 30 minutes and can last 3-5 hours after being sprayed.
Heart notes most often include heavier floral scents. The middle and base notes are the extra layers of scents that give the fragrance its distinctive smell.
  • Base note – The last to develop and helps fix the fragrance to the skin. This is where you will smell the bolder notes of the scent, which become more noticeable when the fragrance has been on the skin for a while. Base notes lay the foundation for the fragrance and will determine how long the fragrance lasts on your skin. Base notes tend to last from 5 to 10 hours. Typical base notes are sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla, tar, leather, smoke, tobacco, and musk.

Now that we understand the basics, let’s go over the common fragrance notes that will make you more attractive in the eyes (and noses!) of women.

Attractive Fragrance Note #1 – Vetiver

Vetiver is a green, aromatic, and woody fragrance. It is one of the most popular notes in fragrances, not only for men but for women as well.

Even though it’s present in fragrances for both genders, it is more associated with men’s fragrances, because of its dark and earthy root quality. It often reminds of freshly cut grass, a cigar lounge, or your grandfather’s favorite barbershop – and it’s those masculine qualities in the Vetiver note that women find attractive.

Most common Vetiver fragrances include Lalique Encre Noir, Tom Ford Grey Vetiver, Creed Original Vetiver, Guerlain Vetiver, and Terre D’Hermes Eau Intense Vetiver.

A great vetiver fragrance is sure to bring you compliments.

Attractive Fragrance Note #2 – Citrus Notes

Nothing says fresh and fruity like a proper citrus fragrance. Be honest gentlemen, who here doesn’t enjoy a juicy mandarin, or grapes during the warm parts of the year?

The same goes for fragrances – the freshness of citrus notes are sure to capture attention from women who pass you by on a hot summer day.

Women, in particular, love citrus fragrances. Not only for themselves, but for their man as well. It makes you smell and look more energized, crisp, fresh, immaculate, and clean – like a nice summer breeze. So it’s no wonder Citrus notes are among the most attractive fragrance notes!

However, you’ve got to be careful when it comes to citrus notes. If you pick the wrong fragrance, you just may come off smelling like bad bubblegum – which is something that you want to avoid.

And to make sure you don’t make the mistake of picking up the wrong fragrance, here are some popular citrus fragrances that turn heads and are compliment getters –  Orange Spice by Creed, Chrome by Azzaro, Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford, Essenza di Colonia by Aqua di Parma and Sauvage by Dior

Citrus notes were always known as some of the most attractive fragrance notes because of their freshness.

Attractive Fragrance Note #3 – Aquatic Notes

Coming hand in hand with the citrus notes, aquatic notes remind women of the ocean, carefree days when everything is just perfect.

With aquatic notes, you give yourself the freedom to be the adventurous, outdoor man who goes out there and does what he wants – when he wants. Do I even have to go into detail about why that would attract women? I didn’t think so.

An important thing to remember is that aquatic fragrances usually aren’t too heavy, since their purpose is to make you feel cooler and fresh during summer. So you might want to be careful incorporating them in other parts of the year.

And to make it simple, here are five aquatic fragrances that will make a girl fall in love with the way you smell when you’re walking by the beach – Cool Water by Davidoff, Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani, Invictus Aqua by Paco Rabanne, Aqva Pour Homme Marina by Bvlgari

Nothing beats a hot summer day like the beach and summer breeze – why not smell like that and grab attention anywhere you go?

Attractive Fragrance Note #4 – Tobacco

Tobacco… A scent that still makes a lot of people cringe. And to be honest, there are reasons. A lot of people associate tobacco with their yellow-toothed aunt or uncle who smoked two packs a day.

But, what a lot of people don’t realize, that’s not what tobacco smells like. Especially in fragrances.

It’s easy to overlook tobacco fragrances and the note itself, especially because of the wide range of notes available.

But tobacco note smells like a warm cabin during a cold winter day – cozy, aromatic, and perfect for snuggling up next to somebody special. Also, make sure to check out the Top 10 Best Smelling Winter Colognes.

And that is why tobacco is definitely one of the most attractive fragrance notes that women love to smell on a man.

The great thing about tobacco is that it pretty much works with all other fragrance families as well. Some of the most popular tobacco fragrances include – Spicebomb by Viktor&Rolf, Tobacco Vanille by Tom Ford, Gucci Gucci By Gucci Pour Homme, L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake, and The Dreamer by Versace.

Tobacco fragrances are ridiculously underrated. If you don’t have one, make sure to pick it up ASAP!

Attractive Fragrance Note #5 – Wood Notes

Wood fragrance notes have been used for centuries in men’s fragrances. And for a good reason.

Wood notes are just what you expect them to be – natural, earthy, and elegant.

It’s no surprise women find wood notes especially attractive, given the fact that they give a sense of power, authority, and confidence. Plus, it’s the fragrance of man’s natural habitat and traditionally manly occupations (such as farmer, hunter, woodsman).

Most of the women that I’ve spoken to said they love woody fragrances that their man wears because there’s something about that primal scent that drives them absolutely nuts.

So if you want to be one of the smooth and masculine guys in the office, or the best smelling guy when you’re out with friends, check out these fragrances that will make you attractive as hell to women around you – Oud Wood by Tom Ford, Royal Oud Cologne by Creed, 1 Million Intense by Paco Rabanne, Intenso by Dolce & Gabbana and Lagerfeld Classic by Karl Lagerfeld.

A good wood fragrance is a must-have – especially for the fall and winter seasons!
